Many people wonder if they have diabetes and how they can control it. Since diabetes is the medical term for a state of high blood sugar levels, many would say that they do not have it since the body does not have high blood sugar levels and thus does not show signs of diabetes.

For years, physicians used to believe that the only way to know if someone has diabetes is by the blood sugar levels in their blood. Today, however, researchers are studying other ways to determine if someone has diabetes. If a person has some following symptoms, he or she may be a high risk for diabetes.

If the person has frequent urination or has pale skin and eyes, which also show a decreased level of exercise and lower levels of energy, he or she may have type 2 diabetes and he or she needs to take action. Diabetes is a serious disease that can kill a person over time if not treated effectively.

If a person’s fingernail starts to turn yellowish or white, he or she may have diabetes. This can be life-threatening because the skin gets thicker and hardens and the blood supply is not as good as it used to be.

If a person has unexplained weight loss or that his or her eyelids are droopy, he or she may have diabetes. The droopy eyelids will not allow a person to see well and that means that more dangerous blood sugar levels will circulate throughout the body and that is what causes the droopy eyelids.

It is possible to have high blood sugar levels without the person having any symptoms. That is why doctors use blood tests and urinalysis to test for diabetes. However, those who have done the tests and find that they have diabetes often find themselves looking for information on how to get a handle on the disease.

If you know that you have diabetes, ask your doctor if you can change your diet and exercise. A person with diabetes should cut down on the amount of sugar that he or she consumes and should exercise on a regular basis.

The food that the body needs in order to function properly should be included in the diet. Fruits and vegetables should make up the majority of the food group and drinking plenty of water is necessary in order to keep the body hydrated.

As a person who is overweight, a doctor will want to work with a person to lose excess weight and to do so safely. If a person is obese, the risk of developing complications from diabetes increases.

To prevent insulin deficiency, a person with diabetes should watch his or her blood sugar levels as they do not only need insulin to regulate their glucose but also to maintain proper blood pressure and to regulate certain body functions such as brain activity. High blood sugar levels cause nerve cells to die and to add insult to injury, it also decreases the production of white blood cells that help fight infection.

Having diabetes does not mean that a person does not exercise or that he or she does not eat well. Having diabetes, however, does mean that the person needs to do a little more to make sure that his or her body is as healthy as possible.
